Tundra and Timber
*****
***

Tundra had a little adventure out into the wilderness last weekend, running happily back and forth enjoying the snow, diving into the snow banks and showing off of what he could do. The night was here and it would be time soon to go to sleep but not for Tundra, this newly refreshed freedom was something he needed to revel in. MrWabbit and I called and called him but he’d show up only to quickly run and jump nilly willy all over the land chasing the snow he had kicked into the air. Timber, his much less adventurous brother, who preferred the heat from the fireplace, in the meantime went from window to window peering outside hoping his brother would come to his senses and come back inside.

Finally it got to be too late, we had to go to bed and we wondered if Tundra decided to cherish this regained freedom into the wilderness, leave mom and brother behind never to return? We wondered.

Tundra must have seen the lights in the house one by one being turned off, no one was watching his antics anymore, even his brother finally left the window and went to sleep beside the fire place. Tundra suddenly felt the vast land, the very cold snow and realized he was alone. Very, very alone.

With no audience left to cheer him on (as he had thought all this fuss was about) Tundra realized he missed the warmth of the fire, but when he decided to come back he was met with an obstacle he hadn’t expected.

Spunky, a feral cat that had taken up resident on our property this winter was named spunky because he had fought the Big Boy, the resident feral tom who had claimed the barn as his own. Spunky however chose the shelter closest to the kitchen door and first in line to get food and warm milk. Big Boy wouldn’t have it and would often chase Spunky away, but Spunky remained determined and somehow figured out the timing of when Big Boy would come around and then mysteriously vanish during Big Boy’s visit for warm milk.

But now Spunky was in Tundra’s way to get back to the kitchen door and let everyone know he was ready to come in. Tundra was afraid of Spunky from the time he was just a toddler and would come to eat with his Mom and brother. Only with his mom’s encouragement and of course Spunky taking off like the wind would the area be clear to eat and drink. They were not afraid of Big Boy; perhaps he is the father of Timber and Tundra. Often Big Boy would come first and clear the area where soon after Tobie, the mother; Tundra and Timber would come waddling behind her.

It would be a long sleepless night for Tundra, he’d find shelter and perhaps even some heat where Big Boy also spends the night, but the night noises of whatever it is that make these sounds in the snow would not let him sleep. Big Boy would surely tell him of the wolves that love kitties….. For lunch that is! And of course Big Foot or even the Abominable Snowman. The silence of the night can be incredibly deafening where the breaking of a twig under the heavy snow can sound like a cannon going off echoing through your ears.

The next morning over coffee MrWabbit and Wabbit had to come up with a plan. The kitchen door was the only way Tundra had learned before he and his mom and brother were brought in for the winter. The only solution was to capture Spunky, bring him inside until Tundra could be coaxed, shuffled or nudged back into the house. Plan went into action and one hour later Spunky was in the house, welcomed by Murphy. This went well MrWabbit and Wabbit sighed with relief and another hour later Tundra being adventurous as he is, was brought into the house by letting him chase after a wiley toy that happened to be attached to a string manipulated by MrWabbit.

Tundra experienced his first solo adventure and only he would be able to tell his brother Timber of what he had experienced through the night. After a good warm meal and warm milk both settled on a blanket by the window and while Tundra spoke of his ordeal that only a feline could fathom, Timber quietly fell asleep. Tundra nudged himself closer to his brother knowing how good it feels to have a warm and safe home. Soon the snow will melt and soon warmer days will be here where then both brothers can enjoy the outdoors and find new adventures waiting for them.

Good story Wabbit...!
I'm sure Tundra has a renewed appreciation for His Home and your Fireplace...
I'm not too keen on Spunky, as he doesn't seem to have the "Troop-Spirit"...
I'm sure Tobie was worried... and then relieved...
It is odd for a cat to like the Snow so much... but is delightful, I'm sure, to see the play...
Panzer (my Siamese) did the paw shaking and complained (they are a very vocal breed) bitterly... Panzer was always talking to me... I could tell it was speech, because he would not speak if I was busy doing something or sleeping... other times he would come and put a paw on me and say a few cat words... I actually learned to reply... a "meow" that goes up in pitch at the end is a question, and one that goes down in pitch is a statement... that much I learned...
The Troop is no end of entertainment, and Mr wabbit is both patient and clever in his role of "Critter-Wrangler"...
That's actually a job in the Movie business "Critter Wrangler"... I like to read the credits... I worked at a Regional Performing Arts Center at U-T for 4 years once, and we toured shows to the Kennedy Center and Broadway, so every now and again I see a name I know...

Gary - MrWabbit needs the exercise - winks and smiles - besides I should have had a video camera to film his sprints through the high snow with a toy attached to a long string LOL.
I absolutely agree with you on cats communicating in their own vocalization - I also have noticed the varried meows - each tone having a different meaning - hence followed up with either action or vocal response from any of the other cats it was intended for.
I need to get a video PC cam

Oooops almost forgot about Spunky - he'll hopefully will get relocated when the time comes. The troop don't mind him but Timber and Tundra are afraid of him.

PS: Spunky has been released back onto the land and his shelter after having spent a couple of days with us to get to know us and realize we will not harm him. So that we can move his shelter further away from the kitchen door when it is time for the rest of the troop to come and go as they will.

Tobie, the mother has been spayed and vaccinated to be released back into the wild when the weather permits. If she chooses next winter to come back she’ll be welcome. Tobie will receive a collar that can break away if needed.

Tundra and Timber will get neutered this coming week and also vaccinated and receive their collar to show they belong here.

Ah what an adventure! So far all that my stinkpot has experienced is getting lost in the closet........or maybe I just thought she was lost and she really has a shoe fettish? ..(making mental note to check all shoes before wearing)...

HAPPY EASTER!!!

This has been a joy to read Trudi! Sweet as anything. :)
Don't know if Tundra and Timber will think that about the impending vet visit... hehehe... ;)

Loved the "adventure" story and the happy ending. The pic is adorable.

Viccles - Hmmmm shoe fetish eh? I had been wondering about why Mikey keeps wanting to get into my closet all the time. I also will have to have a check at my shoes.

Sue sis in law - I have a feeling the two boys will not be too happy for a little while, but it will also give them a guaranteed passage to stay here with the Big Boy guarding the territory. They might very well be his offspring but once they would reach maturity Big Boy would escort them off the property. Maybe you could come here and explain it to them that it was done for their benefit? Smiles.

Judy - thanks - I really went to bed sad that night and full with worried thoughts. I was sooooo relieved when we got him back into the house.

Huuugs everyone

Haha Goosie - Timber reminds me of a ringtailed Lemur lol. He was always the shyest one from the very first day his mom brought the two of them here. Tundra always the most daring and now he's still the most curious wanting to know who is doing what. Timber is the gentle one with so much loving and affections whereas Tundra doesn't have time for all that smoochie stuff LOL

AWWWW, tundra looks like my female feral who just had kitties by the way and is letting us pet them. They are so cute. She had them in a basket I put in a chair outside in front of the window so I got to watch a birth. Great story Wabbit and I can see MrWabbit with the toy. lol

Great story. We have a pair of cats that Grandpa brought from the barn last year. One is 100% coal black with just a few whire hairs on her chest and bright gold eyes. This little girl does not like it outside at all!! Dumb cat. Her partner is your typical black and white and loves it outside.Your animal stories are great fun to read. How many cats do you have anyway? Last count we had 20 some in the barn but over the winter between the owls, hawks and coyotes their number is greatly reduced. Do you have problems with these?
