NASA also has a hole in its cloud, Noctilucent Cloud

We were just talking about “punch hole clouds” and after having received e-mail today from NASA about more clouds from space as well one in particular that has some amazing hole in it, I thought to post it right away and not wait until next weekend. There is also a video link to go with it.

From NASA:

Strange Clouds at the Edge of Space

August 25, 2008: When in space, keep an eye on the window. You never know what you might see.

Last month, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) witnessed a beautiful display of noctilucent or "night-shining" clouds. The station was located about 340 km over western Mongolia on July 22nd when the crew snapped this picture:

Above: Noctilucent clouds photographed by the crew of the ISS: more.

Atmospheric scientist Gary Thomas of the University of Colorado has seen thousands of noctilucent cloud (NLC) photos, and he ranks this one among the best. "It's lovely," he says. "And it shows just how high these clouds really are--at the very...

Saved from Drowning

This year I’m afraid we won’t be seeing any summer. It’s been raining en mass here in Quebec and the consequences are clear by having lost my vegetable garden, save one tomato plant that might give fruit sometimes during the winter. But the rest of the garden drowned. As well as a lot of my rose bushes and other flower seeds I had planted.

Since the middle of May I had been pretty much playing tent with my rose bushes and still some of them I’ve lost, some look like they might come back by next year and some I actually managed to save. Woooooo

Yesterday the storm however took its toll and we managed to get some water into the house. The basement, my bedroom and a playroom I have for the troop (it used to be their prison room to cool off inside if they were naughty) But Master Murphy after having experienced one night what it’s like having to spend overnight inside, with only food and water as comfort but nothing else, decided to form a committee where all pledged to motion to beh...

SOLAR ECLIPSE and COMET ALERT

On Friday, August 1st, the Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun producing a total solar eclipse. The narrow path of totality stretches from arctic Canada through Greenland, Siberia, and Mongolia, and comes to an end in China, where millions of people will witness the event. Even more people will see the partial eclipse, visible from almost all of Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia and a corner of North America. The action begins at approximately 09:20 UT (5:20 am EDT) when the Moon's shadow first hits Earth in northern Canada and begins its rapid sweep toward China.

Whenever two biologists get together observing some goldfish in a pond isn’t an ordinary “oh that’s nice” event and then move on into another direction. That pond in fact becomes another world of varied dimensions. Not just the pigments and spectrum of the fish, but all the other living creatures that make that pond an ecosystem-inhabited world that only a microscope would verify what you see and speculate with your mind.
And as simple as the pond appears with the fishies swimming in and out of their caves and through their man-made obstacle course. Apart from the lakes of Missouri or the Great Lakes of Canada, yet integrally woven together with our planet, space and time.

Pagliacci and Dr.Lisa

Pagliacci and th rest of the students are getting so big. I also have 3 little ones that joined quietly when no one noticed.
I moved the bird bath out of the critter spa and moved it where I noticed the birds were gathering for a tea party of some kind. Now they'll be able to wash up after their snack lol.
The flowers around the birdbath will be part of my next project (if it ever stops raining) I'll find something else to put in the centre of the Taiga Critter

Saved by the Chainsaw

This morning MrWabbit called me from outside to come quick and so I did and saw three hawks circling above the trees where the Robin Family and other birds are nesting. Of course I ran inside to grab the camera, by that time two more hawks joined. MrWabbit started up the chainsaw to get the hawks away. Our birds are used to hearing MrWabbit and his chainsaw (smiles).

I saw something very interesting not only did the parent birds shrill out the warning but also used themselves as bait and flew towards other trees and away from where the nests were. Circling halfway back and then flying off even a bit further, and then further. The hawks took the bait and the baby birds are all well and safe once more.

I’ve received an invitation today by the president of Parc Safari Monsieur Jean-Pierre Ranger, to come on July 9th 2008 – 11:30 a.m. and have a peek at the three newly arrived white lions.

Also present are
Dr. Michel Hébért, le Haut-Commissionaire de l’Afrique Sud,
Dr. Abraham S. Nkomo.
Linda Tucker President GWLPT

These are not albino lions these are truly white lions. Chris McBride researched their family history back to 1974.
These lions are since October of last year protected by the Global White Lion Protection Trust, Linda Tucker President.
More researches on these rare and delicate lions will be done to ensure their survival. There are now only 150 white lions in South Africa.

I’m sooooo excited to have that chance to see these lions up close.
The invitation is for 4 and of course MrWabbit and my kids will come along with me. My daughter Vikki who is a Bio-med Analyst will be thrilled when she gets this news. She’ll be back from her vacation from Maine, ...

Lord Michael gets his own lounger

“Spunky” our new addition of the feral cats that has his own little shelter outside got snipped at the Vet’s last Thursday. Now he needs to stay at home for a while and then he’ll have the wilderness of the Taiga Forest once more. But in the meanwhile he’s enjoying a comfy bed in the troop’s playroom and today I decided with the supervision of Master Murphy so that Spunky inadvertently does not cross paths with the feral The Big Boy, he should have some time outside. During this time Spunky very much so decided to become part of the troop. Somewhat staying at the edge of the troop’s circle waiting to be accepted by all, Spunky nevertheless edged closer and closer. There was a little incident that could have lost him the admittance and that was when the dominant female Tobie, the apple of Master Murphy’s eye, caught a field mouse and brought it back to her son, Timber to enjoy. Fluffy decided to show Timber how to prepare a mouse for lunch but Spunky with a swift movement of his paw of ...

After a month and some of daily rain, what some of you might call spring, I call the mud season, and we also got the unusual cold weather. I’ll rephrase that – Someone had asked if I’d make a veggie garden this year and I had responded with a smug smirk “When hell freezes over”; well it did and I made a veggie garden.

What does the weather have to do with life’s lesson? Probably nothing – I just need to complain, then again…. as you know I had built a Taiga Critter Spa (aka pond) a school of goldfish and all its trimming. You know the saying “Things that have a probability to go wrong will go wrong” Here I was, faithfully every weekend, first thing in the morning until the sun went down or the black flies and mosquitoes put on their bibs and sharpened their utensils to feast on me, to get my project done, including my veggie garden.
My Private Little Sun Room

It has been raining over the weekend and when there are days such as these, here is where I like to come. A little place of my own, where I can sit and listen to the rain or read or listen to some soft music not to drown out the sound of the rain. I had to draw the blinds because of the contrast of outside and inside, but as a rule the blinds are open and I can see outside to the patio, the Taiga Critter Spa (aka the pond), up ahead towards the back of the land and towards the right.
When my two kids, Vikki and Kenny were still at home and had their friends over, playing their music and Video games or watching movies in the TV room you can very well imagine that this little room was heaven on earth lol. Now whenever it rains I still like to come here.

NASA'S PHOENIX SPACECRAFT LANDS AT MARTIAN ARCTIC SITE

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Phoenix spacecraft landed in the northern
polar region of Mars Sunday to begin three months of examining a site
chosen for its likelihood of having frozen water within reach of the
lander's robotic arm.

Radio signals received at 4:53:44 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53:44 p.m.
Eastern Time) confirmed the Phoenix Mars Lander had survived its
difficult final descent and touchdown 15 minutes earlier. The signals
took that long to travel from Mars to Earth at the speed of light.

Sleepy Saturday

To your question where are the critters – I replied they are all asleep cozy and warm with the fire going while I’m outside in the rain.

Lord Michael of course having gotten whiff that I was taking evidence of the alleged accusations of everyone being sound asleep, stormed outside in a huff and got busy showing how hard he’s working.

Master Murphy having gotten stuck in the tree last week having shown his adopted sons how to climb trees, once more yesterday he chased Rascal up the tree but decided to come down quickly and safely after having learned his lesson well of how trees can reach out and grab ya he decided instead to jump on a lavender baby bush which cracked and broke under his weight teaching his adopted sons all about instant deforestation.

The Project

The Project is to build a bird bath well also Lord Michael and the troop along with chipmunks and squirrels will enjoy it.
The idea is to get a wall of stones and wood with slow running water at the far side of the bird bath pouring into the bird bath.
I’ll keep on taking pictures as the project progresses.

The Alcove between the Kitchen and TV room – it’s still too cold to put flowering plants outside so I have to wait. The carpet is for Lord Michael and the troop and their little muddy feetsies to get cleaned off there before they go into the house. The colour of the carpet is actually grey but the heating lamp is on for those kitty cats that live in the barn as a rule and come to visit the rest of the troop.

I’ll be posting more pictures soon.
